It appears to have been translated into another language, then translated back into a broken, unintelligible facsimile of English. Yes, I know Henry James's language is dense; I've read several of his novels and I promise you that is not the issue with this "edition". I cannot imagine what transpired to result in this bizarre mutilation. Amazon/Kindle, I am a most unhappy customer, and I would like my money returned! I don't understand it at all, and have no idea why this has been given so much praise. I fully expect that it's some deficiency in me, and I really don't want anyone to "explain" it to me. Wanted to read it again with many decades of reading since the first time I read it. I love Victorian and Edwardian writers. Love the detailed descriptions and rich atmosphere these writers so well infuse into their stories. Turn of the Screw was not one of them. The narration was filled with obscure mental ramblings. The sentences rambled, beating, not about the bush, but about a number of bushes until the final point of the thought is reached. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2020 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from M. Dowden -- Deservedly A Classic : If you mention Henry James people always seem to shy away, thinking that his books are hard to read or to understand. Sometimes very long winded perhaps, but not in this case. Even if you never read anything else by Henry James ever, there is still plenty of reason to read this. I don't know myself how many times I have read this novella over the years, as it is something that you find yourself coming back to time and time again. Yet then I reflected on my reading experience, and decided that this rating would be a little unfair. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from Dr Lesley J Twigg -- this version is a translation : Language was almost unintelligible. I thought at first that it was due to the style . I realized however, as I plowed through it, that the only explanation for the awful grammar etc was that the book had been translated back to English from some other language. My suspicions were,I think, confirmed when the" bank" of a lake was described as "financial institution" .Looks almost like a computer translation rather than by anyone with ant understanding.
