Currently they are in the Department of Energy, a Department we all too often think deals with cars, oil, and the like. However the Secretary of Energy also deals with the most deadly weapons in our arsenal, assuming we eliminated the mass of bio-weapons that were there once. The wandering path over time that these weapons have taken has a parallel path in keeping secrets what are deemed as secret and secure what must be secured. By creating a new term “restricted data” and then proceeding the define that term as fitting, the government has managed to cloak such information in secrecy. Author Wellerstein has done a massive amount of research into the area. This deserves to be a textbook for anyone interested in the topic. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2021 )

• 5.0 out of 5 stars from Eric OD Green -- Un ouvrage majeur sur la naissance du secret appliqué aux armes nucléaires : Alex Wallerstein a rédigé un ouvrage qui deviendra un classique aux Etats-Unis et qui concerne la naissance et l'évolution de la politique de contrôle de l'information des technologies nucléaires militaires apparue avec le projet Manhattan. Depuis cette époque est apparu aux Etats-Unis la mention Secret : Restricted Data qui s'applique à tous les documents relatifs aux armes nucléaires et qui a par la suite été considérablement renforcé par tout un ensemble d'habilitation spécifique (Sigma Q). L'ouvrage montre la difficulté de maintenir étanche un tel système et montre que d'une manière ou une autre les informations ont tendance a migrer dans l'ouvert : l'ouvrage cite les cas de Chuck Hansen, John Coster-Muller, Howard Morland et Carey Sublette, notamment et montre que le contrôle de l'information est une chose délicate dans un pays ou l'on a régulièrement des campagnes de déclassification plus ou moins bien gérées. L'ouvrage est fort bien écrit par quelqu'un qui connaît bien son sujet, et une nouvelle fois on ne peut que regretter l'absence de traduction en française de cet ouvrage et la méconnaissance de l'anglais universitaire par les Français qui parlent fort et râlent mais ne font guère autre chose... • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Mariette -- A slow start, but became more interesting with the emergence and growth of the cold war. : I found the start of the book rather dry as the secrecy mechanisms were developing along with the Manhattan Project. Things became more interesting with the military and bureaucratic struggles for post-war secrecy, the cold war, and the competing need for scientific and business use of nuclear technology.
