Funny and touching story. : As an airedale lover and being owned by one, and as a cancer survivor this book made me laugh and i was able to relate to so many of the thoughts that can run through your mind. I had to stop and read parts to my husband because they were so typical Airedale and so funny. I would recommend this book to any person who loves Airedales or just wants to read a very good true story about a man who is as funny as his dog. By the way, it is mentioned a couple of times that you dont see many Airedales anymore. That is because they are so special that only people with a real sense of humor can handle them and Airedales are so special they only deserve someone who gets their uniqueness. I have loved "meeting" Airedales from all over the world. It has been wonderful to get to "know" Dale owners and their dogs and is absolutely one of the reasons I am still active on Facebook. The Group has helped me weather the loss of three of my dogs since 2012. There is a real sense of community, whether we are mourning our losses or celebrating the breed we love so much. This Book is for You! : Richard has been documenting the Doris adventures on FB for several years, and this book includes many of the stories that are familiar to us FB fans! (Rabbit hat video is hysterical!) Now he shares Doris with everyone!! Richard also shares details of his harrowing cancer battle, which is a remarkable survival story. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from SHR15 -- Fabulous book!! : This book is truly fabulous. Richard takes us through Doris' puppyhood (which with any puppy is trying, but with an Airedale, magnify that by about 1000!!), all whilst coping with his own health issues. There are tales of his previous Airedales, as well as many stories with his wife Gill and their travels through England on their longboat Florence. Richard absolutely has a way with words and is able to completely engross his readers. He could not possibly describe Airedales any better, especially when he says that when you call your dog, they come, when you call an Airedale, you can quite literally see them considering your request and deciding whether to come or use their selective hearing and ignore you. If you are owned by an Airedale (we have numbers 3 and 4), you will recognized all these Aire behaviors! If you have any other special mischievous dog in your life, you will understand too. Richard's descriptive prose puts you right there with them. It is like you KNOW them! So Special. Laughing, crying, understanding.... just wonderful! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Susan Goffman -- Entertaining and touching : Even though I knew some of these stories already, I was entertained by Richard and Doris all over again! As a four-time Airedale owner I can feel the same mixture of exasperation and love, and like so many others, wouldn’t have it any other way. Richard’s willingness to share the brutal truths about the cancer journey he and Gill are experiencing went right to my heart. In December 2020 my husband was diagnosed out if the blue with stage IV lung cancer. He too is being treated with immunotherapy. I hope I am as much support to him as Gill is to Richard. A mixture of comical (aka stressful) experiences with Doris the Airedale, but also moving with the battle with cancer for the author, and informative about travels on a narrowboat on the canals of England. Having owned 3 rescue Airedales I could relate so well to his experiences. It is beautifully written with excellent humour and so interesting reading about his time with ill health.
